British rapper Kano thinks that we all rely on technology too much What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? Probably the Akai MPC4000 beat machine , because it's the machine that got me doing my own beats and producing new and different styles of music. When was the last time you used it, and what for? A few months ago, for a song called Mad. The Akai machine is very exposed on that track. What additional features would you add if you could? There is an MPC5000 that has a bigger screen, and you can see the wave as you hit the beat, so I'd like that.

Actor Naoko Mori loves all things Apple – except for the iPhone What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? There's a lot. I'm Japanese, I'm a gadget freak – I like anything with buttons. I want to say my computer, but if I had to choose one, I'd say my mobile phone. This is almost sacrilegious, because I'm a complete Macophile, but I actually still have a BlackBerry – I just prefer the buttons. I'm still on the fence with the iPhone because of the buttons and the texting. When was the last time you used it, and what for? Eight minutes ago, checking emails. What additional features would you add if you could? I travel so much – I'm in the US a lot, and in Japan – that I currently have three phones.

Actor Kimberley Nixon on her boyfriend's efforts to stop her iPod killing her, her dad's tech support, and why she prefers PCs What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? It's very boring, and everyone's said it, but it has to be my iPod. I travel a lot, and being on my own for hours for hours and hours on a train or a plane, it's something to keep me company. When was the last time you used it, and what for? This morning on my way to work. I'm doing some rehearsals for the RSC, so it was good to get some kind of music into my system. What additional features would you add if you could? It's already been invented – the iPod pillow speaker, which I got as a Christmas present. I like to listen to my iPod when I go to sleep, but I always get tangled up in the wires. My boyfriend got it for me so that I didn't kill myself

Oscar-winning film director Scott Hicks wishes that he could use his iPhone when travelling to foreign lands What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? My favourite is my Gator – which, if you're not familiar with it, is a six-wheel independent transmission all-terrain vehicle that I use at my vineyard. It has a light footprint, huge fat tyres, and it's endless fun. In springtime, we're dogged with kangaroos which come out of the bush and nibble the new vine shoots. Because we don't want to shoot them, I get my Gator out and go up and down the rows chasing kangaroos. There's no more contemplative experience than watching kangaroos bouncing along in front of you. When was the last time you used it, and what for? I used it last weekend when my family came up camping at the vineyard. I took my grandsons for a spin. What additional features would you add if you could?

The writer and director of Paranormal Activity admits he's a sucker for the latest bit of gadgetry What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? I would say it's probably my new phone, the Palm Pre. I use it for everything – email, browsing the web, applications, listening to music. I just use it non-stop. It's the one thing I use more than anything else except for my PC. When was the last time you used it, and what for? I'm using it right now! What additional features would you add if you could? I'm pretty much sure it does everything I need at the moment… maybe better support for global travel? Because I think it's limited in the number of countries that it can work in. Do you think it will be obsolete in 10 years' time? Yeah, I think most technology will be obsolete in 10 years and will be replaced by something better. What always frustrates you about technology in general

The Good Life co-writer on why he bought a Mac, and how he had to admit defeat with a chess computer What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? I suppose it's a Mac, which I'm sitting in front of now. I don't know if it's improved my life, but it's made bits of it easier. You can find things out much more quickly now, so it's eased life. When was the last time you used it, and what for? This morning, to look at some train times for a friend of mine. What additional features would you add if you could? None, really – as long as it does what I tell it to do, that's all I want. Do you think it will be obsolete in 10 years' time? Oh God yes, it's probably obsolete now. It's a year old now, so that's an antique by computer standards. What always frustrates you about technology in general? That it's too difficult for me to understand.

Imogen Heap: ‘Don’t blame the machines, it’s not their fault’

Why singer Imogen Heap wants to make electricity out of horse manure What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? I was going to say Macs, but everyone says that, so I'm going to go into geek mode. I have these wireless wrist microphones that I wear on stage – they are throat mics that I've adapted. The audio gets picked up and goes into my computer. What's great about them is that I can wander about on stage and grab any instrument – like the wine glasses I use – and the mics are in the perfect position to pick up the sound. They've completely transformed me on stage. When was the last time you used them

Actor Peter Ferdinando: In 10 years’ time, a chip implanted in my head will have replaced my iPhone

Peter Ferdinando , who stars in new film Tony, started out with a Commodore 64, but now wants a motorcycle like Tron What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? I've found that everyone around me has got one, and so I've had to submit, and I've found it a godsend … it's the iPhone. When was the last time you used it, and what for? This morning – I used it to check my emails. What additional features would you add if you could? I think the battery life is not very strong – I find that over the course of the day it just doesn't last and I have to find somewhere to charge it. Do you think it will be obsolete in 10 years' time? Technology moves so fast, I'd say probably. We may have a chip implanted in the back of our heads or something. What always frustrates you about technology in general? For me, when things go wrong and I don't know how to fix it. Is there any particular piece of technology that you have owned and hated? My first computer was a Commodore 64 – I'm showing my age – and that was an awful thing. But it was revolutionary. If you had one tip about getting the best out of new technology, what would it be? Not being extremely technical, I would say keep the same password for everything. I'm always forgetting passwords.

Comedian Rich Hall hates most gadgets – especially mobile phones – but is very fond of his automatic guitar tuner What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? I don't really own many gadgets – I tend to lose them right away. I lost my wedding ring last week, so compare that to any gadget. The one I've held on to the longest is an automatic guitar tuner – I don't even know the name of it. It's pentagonal in shape – it's a satanic guitar tuner. You put it on the end of your guitar, turn it on and it tells you when your guitar is in tune. I find it astounding because I have a tin ear. When was the last time you used it, and what for? I used it last night to tune my fucking guitar – what else would I use it for

Musician turned filmmaker Federico Zampaglione wants a flying car to help him to get around Rome What's your favourite piece of technology, and how has it improved your life? I work a lot with my computer. Being a musician and director it is really useful for my job, it gives me total control on everything – recording, mixing, editing etc. When was the last time you used it, and what for? I'm using it, right now, responding to your questions! What additional features would you add if you could? Maybe a time-transporting function. Touring with my band, Tiromancino, is very tiring … too many kilometres Do you think it will be obsolete in 10 years' time? In technology terms, 10 years is a huge distance. With the pace of chance at the moment, I can't begin to imagine what is going to happen in such a long time. What always frustrates you about technology in general? Too much technology can be dangerous
